Learn to paint
Queenstown painting classes
Bring your own ideas onto the canvas.
Explore materials, techniques and the basics of painting.
Next short course starts
- Thursday October 9th 6 - 8 pm
- 4-week series - beginners welcome.
Join us this winter for a 4-week guided art workshop focused on helping you create your painting from the ground up. Whether you’re completely new to painting or keen to take your work further, this progressive series offers a warm, creative environment to develop your skills, try new techniques, and connect with other local creatives.
Each two-hour session is designed to introduce you to the core steps of the painting process:
Starting with drawing and transferring your idea to canvas
Building first layers with blocking techniques in acrylic paint
And, for those who want to go deeper, refining with layering, detail, and texture
Together, we’ll explore foundational skills like composition, colour mixing, form, and contrast, while also touching on the differences and overlaps between acrylics and oils. Along the way, you’ll be encouraged to experiment, ask questions, and develop your own creative approach, all within a supportive studio setting.
We welcome all genres and ideas—this is your time to explore and enjoy the process.
What to Bring
Your own canvas (any size) A3 -A2 suggested.
An apron or old clothes
We have plenty of studio paints (acrylics and oils to try), brushes, and mixed media tools will be available for experimentation. If you're using a large canvas and want to paint in oils and don’t yet have a full kit, bringing just a few core colours your interested in— but with Cadmium Yellow, a blue of your choice, and a red— this will give you everything you need for mixing a wide range of colours.
Sustainability in the Studio
We aim to keep things low-waste and environmentally kind by offering shared materials, reusing palettes and boards where possible, and encouraging thoughtful use of paints and resources. You’re welcome to bring your own sustainable art materials if you have favourites, and we’ll always show you simple ways to make the most of what you already have.
Tea and light snacks are available each week, and our cosy shared studio space is a relaxed and friendly place to explore your creativity, no matter your level of experience.
