Join us for a one-of-a-kind art adventure.

At the starting point of the famous Routeburn Track, just beyond Glenorchy, this unforgettable day begins with a gentle, beginner-friendly hike along the stunning Nature Loop. This is a one-hour trail that immerses you in the lush South Island forest. Crossing the picturesque Routeburn River via a swing bridge, you’ll soak in the beauty of the landscape—from moss-covered trees to pristine aqua river views.

Throughout the hike, we’ll pause for sketching stops, capturing the forest and its surroundings in different compositions. After the walk, we’ll head to the riverside shelter viewpoint for morning tea, where breathtaking views down the river await. With the guidance of your personal art tutor, you’ll experience the joy of plein-air painting in the open air. Using easels and small canvas panels, we’ll discuss the environment and choose a composition to paint in the heart of the beautiful Routeburn forest.

All art materials are provided, so all you need to bring is your creativity. This full-day tour is a sensory delight, offering mountain vistas, vibrant flowing rivers, and the enchanting, Lord of the Rings-style beauty of New Zealand's forests. It’s a treat for the soul and a wellspring of inspiration for your artistic journey.

As we spend time deep in the forest, we also walk with care—guided by principles of kaitiakitanga (guardianship of the land). We use reusable art gear, collect and carry out our water and any waste, and take special care to leave every place just as we found it. You'll also learn about the local ecology and the regenerative efforts that help protect these treasured environments for generations to come.

Throughout the day, you’ll gain not only artistic techniques and tips, but a deeper appreciation for the landscapes that inspire them. Your tutor will support you at every step—whether you’re a beginner or seasoned artist—helping you confidently express the beauty of your surroundings in your own unique way.
