Come along and explore the hidden beauty of Kinloch Wilderness retreat .
An hour out of Queenstown along the famous road to Glenorchy, our adventure begins with a tour along the edge of the beautiful Whakatipu Lake. Across the Dart river bridge, in and out of delicate Beech tree forests to the hidden gem at the head of the lake. We discover the quiet beauty of Kinloch Wilderness Retreat
We’ll pause for photos stops, capturing the mountains, branched rivers, forest and its surroundings in different compositions. After a gourmet lunch at the Wilderness lodge and its breathtaking views down the river.
We will spend 2-3 hours to experience the joy of plein-air painting in the open air. Using easels and small canvas panels, we’ll discuss the environment and choose a composition to paint the mountains dropping into the lake.
All art materials are provided, so all you need to bring is your creativity. This full-day tour is a sensory delight, offering mountain vistas, with Lord of the Rings-style beauty of New Zealand's forest landscapes. It’s a treat for the soul and a wellspring of inspiration for your artistic journey.
We spend time guided by principles of kaitiakitanga (guardianship of the land). We use reusable art gear, collect and carry out our water and any waste, and take special care to leave every place just as we found it. You'll also learn about the local ecology and the local regenerative efforts that help protect these treasured environments for generations to come.
Throughout the day, you’ll gain not only artistic techniques and tips, but a deeper appreciation for the landscapes that inspire them. Your tutor will support you at every step—whether you’re a beginner or seasoned artist—helping you confidently express the beauty of your surroundings in your own unique way.
You’ll have the opportunity to sketch, paint and record your impressions of the landscape, connect with others, and take home cherished memories of a day grounded in creativity, connection, and deep respect for nature.
We provide:
Full day tour approx 9 hrs / 8 am meet up - 5 pm finish back at Queenstown. / Or one way for those wishing to stay on at Kinloch lodge.

A jacket
Sunglasses & Hat
Binoculars if you have them
Good walking shoes
Clothes you are happy to paint in.
